The Shreveport aquarium exhibits over 3000 individual animals, ranging from snails to sharks, representing approximately 270 species of fish and invertebrates.
The animals at Shreveport Aquarium will be obtained from sustainable, reliable, and reputable sources. The Shreveport Aquarium will follow, and where possible exceed, the highest standard for obtaining, transporting, and holding animals as set forth by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA). Most will come from individuals and other aquariums who have surplus animals in their collection or from aquaculture sources. It will be necessary for some animals on display to be obtained from the wild in support of critical education and conservation messages.
Biologists trained and experienced as professional aquatic animal care specialists or “aquarists” are on staff to provide the animals at the aquarium with the highest standard and quality of care.
The AZA is the gold standard for animal care at zoos and aquariums around the world. AZA accreditation means achieving and maintaining the highest standards for animal care and educational programming.
The Shreveport Aquarium does not have any marine mammals on exhibit at this time, but we are looking forward to include small mammals such as otters or beaver, as well as some aquatic birds, such as penguins, in the future.
Yes, we have several touch opportunities for guests that will follow AZA guidelines for all animal interactions to insure the safety of both guests and animals. Visitors will be able to touch sea stars, sea urchins, shrimp, stingrays, sharks, sea jellies and more at the aquarium.
